Students alwasy seam to be looking for project ideas.  Also, I have used many projects in class as labs and fun activities.  This page I am intending on having as a repository of various ideas and projects: we may use them, we may not.  I may have comments on how well they worked (or didn't), or not.  Who knows.  This page will likely be always updating and not on any sort of a regular basis, just sporadically.... 

Project 1. Recycling Paper

​This one is fun and easy.  At least, I always thought so.  The idea is to take a bunch of that paper that you have to be recycled in your classroom, and to actually recycle it yourself.  Start with a fun project - make a flower.  It is just a 'cup' shape bit of recycled paper that you glue to a pipe cleaner.  

 

Next step is to make a card.  I like doing this in January or February, so valenties is around and you have a ready made audience for both the card and the flower.

 

Third, and culminating, is to make 10-20 sheets of paper, then bind them together into a book.  I stongly recommend letting students make a practice book with copy paper first.  The covers and the book binding are great projects to incorporate elements of engineering and design theory into.  I usually have students write a childrens story about recycling to put into the book, which helps tie the activity back to the content knowledge.  Works great if you partner with an English teacher, and even better if you have a K-5 school you can have your kids read their books to.
